Summary

Position Overview:

Identifies and investigates problems and trends as well as recommends resolutions for prevention of nosocomial infections for patients, staff and visitors according to established policies and procedures. Assesses, evaluates and provides for the needs of the professional staff in the areas of infectious disease and infection control practices. Provides infection control surveillance and consultation services. Continually analyzes and monitors practices, policies, and systems as they relate to standards of the infection control program; serves as a resource person for nursing and other professional personnel. Supports quality initiatives and reporting mandates through data collection, analysis and reporting. Assists with the preparation and maintenance of accreditation and regulatory compliance.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing or Associate's degree in nursing and must obtain BSN within 2 years of hire OR Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology or Public Health

Experience: Two years of infection control experience in healthcare. Experience in an acute care setting preferred. Certification in Infection Control (CIC) or must obtain within 2 years of hire.

Other Credentials: Registered Nurse - NJ or Bachelor's degree

Knowledge and Skills:Strong customer service and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated knowledge of basic principles of epidemiology, surveillance, data collection and analysis. Working knowledge of microbiology, epidemiology, infectious diseases, aseptic techniques and current practices.

Special Training:Knowledge of Infection Control guidelines, OSHA, and regulatory and CDC requirements.

Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities:Ability to multi-task and ability to function in stressful and emergency situations.

Essential Functions

  • Surveillances activities to decrease healthcare associated infections and improve patients outcomes. Reviews and exercises discretion and judgment when investigating trends, clusters, outbreaks and unusual events.
  • Identifies and tracks nosocomial infections.
  • Reports communicable diseases and outbreaks to appropriate regulatory agencies.
  • Provides consultation on epidemiology issues.
  • Performs medical record review to determine if variations from quality criteria exist and to determine if further peer review is required. Maintains current knowledge of guidelines, criteria and evidenced based practices.
  • Participates in data collection and analysis to facilitate effective quality outcomes accurately and effectively. Analyzes statistical reports and develops reports that identify compliance or areas for improvement.
  • Develops, implements and maintains policies and procedures per evidences based standards.
  • Provides effective survey preparation and coordination.
  • Provides consultation, education and training to healthcare personnel.
